Esther is different from any other book in the Bible, it’s the only book in the Bible where God is never mentioned. But while God isn’t mentioned we see God working all through this story. In this series I want you to see in Esther God’s unlikely Saviour, and I want you to see how Esther points us to Jesus.
1. Living in the World 16th February 2020
Esther 1:1-2:18 This sermon looks at the world in which Esther lived and examines what it teaches us about the world in which we live as followers of Jesus, and the challenges we face living in this world.
2. Conflict with the World 23rd February 2020
Esther 2:21-3:15; John 15:18-25; 16:1-4 In this sermon we’re going to see how we are in conflict with the world, and how God calls us to respond to that conflict, not with hatred but with prayer and seeking the good of those who hate us. We’re going to see that this is an ancient conflict, that it is deadly, filled with deceit, and just how comprehensive it is. But we have one advantage that the world doesn’t, God is on our side, like he was on the side of his people in Esther’s day.
3. Standing Against the World 1st March 2020
Esther 4:1-17 When the world throws everything at us like it did to Mordecai and Esther, how do we respond? Do we buckle under the pressure? Do we fight back? Or do we stand against the world trusting in God? In this sermon we’re going to see how Mordecai responds with grief, but also how he trusts in God to provide a saviour, and how he calls Esther to make a stand with him.
4. Being Humble in the World 8th March 2020
Esther 5:1-6:14; Matthew 23:12 In this series on Esther we’ve looked at living in the world and how we experience conflict with the world and have to stand against it, but how do we do that? Do we fight like the world does? Do we hide away from the world? In this sermon we see how we confront the world with humility. Jesus says the exalted will be humbled and the humbled exalted, and that exactly what happens in Esther 5 and 6. It is when we humble ourselves that God lifts us up.
5. God’s Work in the World 17th May 2020
Esther 7:1-8:2 Even though God isn’t mentioned in the book of Esther, we see his hand behind every circumstance. In this sermon we’re going to look at how God works in the world. As Christians we believe God is governs all things according to His holy will, and that nothing happens in this world without His orderly arrangement. And we see that as God orchestrates Haman’s downfall and choregraphs the elevation of Esther and Mordecai. But what does that mean for you and me? Well it means God invites us to join him in his work of fulfilling his purposes in this world.
6. God’s Salvation in the World 22nd March 2020
Esther 8:3-10:3 Have you ever experienced relief? That’s what God’s people experience in the final chapters of Esther, as God saves them from certain destruction. In this sermon we’re going to look at God’s decree of salvation in Jesus, how God’s salvation is fulfilled in Christ, and how we are called to celebrate God’s salvation. Along with God’s people in the days of Esther we’re going to see how God’s salvation gives us hope; brings relief from guilt, fear and striving; and fills us with joy. As we face the coronavirus this message will remind you of the hope and joy we have in Jesus.
